Making Your Perfect Wallpaper

So, you've found a beautiful image that you'd like for your wallpaper. It most probably is small. The nicer images on the web generally are. Here's why: Many pictures don’t look very good when viewed at their actual size. When down-sized, they do. On sites where users rate these images, they consider the small version first. As a result beautiful images generally come in small sizes. This is not a good thing if searching for wallpapers though.

Describing the problem

If there just was a way to increase the size of these images and not lose quality. But wait a moment, you could say. It’s not just that, I would also need to crop some part of my favourite images and then resize them to fit my screen as best as they can.

Let’s see, what were the requirements again?

  1. Resize the desired image without losing quality to fit at least one dimension of the screen
  2. Allow for enlargement of at least 150% with no noticeable degradation in image quality
  3. Possibility to crop these images and maintain the aspect ratio of my screen if possible

Solution: Automatically enlarge the images

First, use Photoshop of course:

  1. It has resizing
  2. Has sharpening
  3. Cropping

Well, cropping works nice, a little bit of overhead always opening Photoshop every time you want to try another image, but hey, it works. The only problem here is the resizing part. Photoshop really blurs the whole image even for upsizing to 120% times the size of the original image. That’s very poor quality enlarging. This means that if you find a 800x600 image (an average size for the good quality images on deviantart) it would be too blurry to fit on a standard 1024x768 screen. This looks really bad. Photoshop is the best thing out there, many people could argue, and it couldn’t do that? How so?

Sharpen it

Here’s where the Photoshop expert comes in. But don’t just upsize it, sharpen it too. It will certainly look better, you’ll see. And he’s right, for this very small enlargement, sharpening can do the trick for some images. Not all, but it’s ok. Still, there is no satisfying solution when it comes to resizing images to 130% times their original size, and there are a lot like that.

To make things short, you could try every possible sharpening/upsizing solution for Photoshop and it wouldn’t get much better but for very few images that aren’t even that good looking in the first place.

Specialized upsizing programs

There are some specialized commercial programs out there, most boast to make perfect enlargement at 1000% times the original. It looks just like some marketing hype, and actually, it really is. Sad, but true. Even so, they are better than what you can do in Photoshop. They simply fail to keep their promise when it comes to just 200% times enlargement. Why’s that? It’s because they were targeted for upsizing images for print.

This is still awful. Images that are so small in the original that they would need 1000% enlargement certainly wouldn’t have enough detail to satisfy my wallpapering desires.

Reshading

That’s where reshade.com comes in. It pretty much solves the upsizing problems I mentioned. The algorithm offered here for free makes even a 200% non-degrading enlarging possible. There’s also a crop feature and the possibility to “quick add” an image for resizing (like for pages on del.icio.us).

So, there you have it, your perfect wallpaper, reshaded and maybe touched-up a little in photoshop.

Animated Wallpaper

Animated wallpapers are applications that place special animations, screen savers and media files directly on the desktop. This makes them different from a typical desktop wallpaper, which is just an image in the background. These applications allow full-fledged 3 dimensional animations, screen savers and media files to be displayed directly in the background. So, if a user is looking for something a little more interesting than animated gif images, this is the perfect application to install. The application includes a standard wallpaper changer which can be configured to cycle through the images. This is just a slideshow that is computer operated and changes the image as per the configuration.

Animated desktop wallpapers is a high quality replacement for the common desktop wallpapers. A distinctive feature is that along with simple beautiful images, it offers the user a real living world, full of sounds and movement. For instance, some animated desk tops can convey the time of the day through audio-visual effects representing the periodic cycle of the dawn, dusk and night on the desktop. Watching an animated wallpaper on a desktop is a great way to relax after a long and exhausting work day.

Amimated wallpapers can be customized adding images, movies, sound clips and other media resources to it. It is a decorator's dream as it allows him to effortlessly add animated themes to a computer’s desktop. Animated wallpapers are very convenient to use as they are not a strain on the computer’s memory or a drag on it’s performance. They work quietly in the background without taking up too many system resources, unless specialized applications are required to run the animation. The program controlling an animated wallpaper is enabled with six themes. An user can set flash files as animated wallpaper as well. This is easy to use and most commands and functions are immediately accessible. The above functionalities and features have contributed to animated wall papers becoming extremely popular with computer users.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Great Game

Batman: Arkham Asylum (Eidos, $59.99, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) redefines superhero games in the same way The Dark Knight set the bar for comic book movies. For DC Comics fans, it's a must-buy, but it's hugely entertaining even if you aren't versed in the whole Batman mythology. Developer Rocksteady has breathed life into the Caped Crusader's universe with aplomb, tackling Gotham and its villainous underbelly with the same fresh - yet faithful - approach Chris Nolan did when rebooting the Batman movie franchise. The result is not only one of the best comic book games ever made, but it's also one of the best games you're likely to play this year. Fans will relish the chance to take on familiar Batman foes like Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc and Scarecrow.

3D Animation

3D animation is a more advanced graphical presentation with the help of computer and digital displayers. Animations such as movies, presentations, walk through, cartoon films, television advertisements and web stuff (life on the Web or Internet) became popular after people tasted 3D graphics. In general Multimedia stuff such as 3D Illustration, AV Presentations, Digital Video, 3D Medical & Scientific Animations are very useful in real life application in respective environments.

Computer Graphics and Animations

3D computer graphics / animations are different from 2D computer graphics / animations in that a 3D representation of geometric data is stored in the computer for the purposes of performing calculations and rendering 2D images. The rendered images are used for later display or for real-time viewing. 3D graphics animations show the angle of camera or viewers, virtual shoot of aerial footage and put the virtual reality 3D model into it perfectly so the 3D animation looks absolutely real. This is called motion tracking, which is when we track the exact motion of the real life camera that shoots the footage and that is replicated perfectly in 3D. The same effect is also used often on the big screen where 3D animations are used to create movie scenes.

Making of 3D Animations

The 3D animations are created based on a theme or concept. The theme is expanded with more detail of the design; flow of the animations is called storyboards. The character and object design and development are the preliminary jobs for animators based on the specification. Based on the storyboard direction further key frames are to be developed. All the characters or objects are called 3D models that are data file that contain the information needed to view or "render" 3-D objects. Key-framing is the process of assigning values to parameters at specific moments in time that specifies frames in an animated sequence. A Texture Map is required for manipulating the scheme or pattern on the models. Texture Mapping is a way of controlling the diffuse color of a surface on a pixel-by-pixel basis, rather than by assigning a single overall value. The graphic designer / character developer can achieve by applying a color bitmap image to the surface. The color patterns / scheme can also be generated by the application itself to create a procedural texture. Finally, the sequences are to be rendered for getting an output with compression. Rendering is the process of producing bitmapped images from a view of 3-D models in a 3-D scene. An animation is a series of such renderings (taking a picture of the scene) each with the scene slightly changed.

3D animation software features:

3D Modeler, TrueType font support, Import and modify file formats, Export .3DS files, Built in 3D Object browser, Jointed character editor, Morph targets, Renderer for high quality, production quality images, Create 3D scenes and animations and output .AVI movie files, .JPG and .BMP images, Supports textures, bump maps, soft shadows, spotlights, fog, and much more, Texture support for .BMP, .GIF, and .JPG format files, Scripting language etc.

Standard Computer System Requirements from 3D Animation software:

Windows NT4, Win95, Win98, WinSE, Win2K, or WinXP, OpenGL accelerated graphics card with full ICD support, (ala GeForce), 64 MB memory, 128MB recommended, or 256MB if you use WinXP, 300 MHz Pentium, 5MB disk space.

AniBoom is involved in 3D Animation Workshop, Competitions, Seminars and online info centers, where you can learn about this beautiful medium, with a special eye for its use on the Web. You can learn how to create 3D graphics and animation step by step, gain knowledge and experiences. Cartoons - Animated Movies

When most people think of cartoons, most likely they think of the short ten minute skits you're used to seeing on your Saturday morning kids shows like Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear, Mighty Mouse and a host of others that so many of us have grown up with. But the truth is, cartoons have been just as big and popular on the big screen in full length motion pictures for just as long.

Probably the person most responsible for the big screen success of animated movies was Walt Disney who began in the 1920s by creating such memorable characters as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. One of his first full feature length films was "Steamboat Willie" which starred Mickey Mouse. Disney went on to produce such memorable films as "Cinderella", "Snow White" "Peter Pan" and the half animated half real person masterpiece "Mary Poppins", which was unique for the times.

However, Disney studios wasn't the only production company to make full feature length animated movies, though they are probably the biggest even to this day. Other companies have joined in on what has become an incredibly huge market for children's animated films. Many of these companies and producers took animation to a new level. Cartoons were no longer the drawn figures that we were used to seeing for the first 50 years of their existence. New forms of animation began to take off with the advances in computer technology.

The most popular of these new forms is what is known as Pixar 3D technology. Pixar, the company, is actually a subsidiary of Disney. The process uses Pixar's animation software to create the cartoon images. The actual steps involved are quite complex, from the initial drawing of the characters, the layout of each scene, the actual movement of the characters through the scene and finally transporting all of this through the software itself. All this information is then stored in huge data files. These files can then be manipulated in a variety of different ways. Human motion itself has never been so easy to imitate, which is what makes these animated movies so realistic. Some of the most popular of these over the years have been "Toy Story", "Shrek", and "Monsters Inc.", just to name a few.

Another type of animation, which has become very popular of late, is the painstaking stop motion animation. This is done by placing actual figures in place on the set and snapping a picture of them. The figures are then moved, sometimes just a fraction of an inch at a time to work their way to the next action in the scene. These are probably the most difficult animated movies to make and require the patience of a saint. Fortunately, Nick Park has that kind of patience. He has created what is arguably the most popular stop motion animated movies ever made, the Wallace and Gromit series, the most famous of these is probably "The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit".

Animated movies, today, are big box office and even winners at the Oscars. Just recently, Shrek became the biggest box office smash for an animated movie ever.

As long as there are kids, both young and old, there will always be a market for big budget animated films. And they just keep getting bigger and better.
